Colombia's Leader Says 'I Would Return to Arms Once More' should United States Intervenes Militarily.

The US President and Colombia's president have escalated the tone in their verbal conflict, heightening tensions between the two countries following American military units struck Venezuela to remove the leader of Venezuela Nicolás Maduro from power.

"He runs drug factories and cocaine factories and his time is running out," the US president stated.

Escalating Threats coupled with Accusations

Speaking to the press over the weekend, Trump suggested comparable armed intervention towards the South American nation, asserting the country is “very sick too” and led by a sick man who enjoys creating narcotics and selling it to the United States."

While Colombia remains the globe's biggest producer of cocaine, no proof exists that President Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is personally connected to the business.

A Strained Partnership

Colombia for decades served as a key ally of the US in the campaign combating drug cartels and received wide political approval in Washington, yet ties have soured markedly following Trump was elected.

Colombia’s narcotics trade is largely controlled by guerrilla factions like the Golf Clan, the National Liberation Army (ELN) and dissident factions of the former Farc guerrillas, the majority of whose members laid down arms after a 2016 peace deal.

Colombia's Firm Response

In response to a query whether military intervention comparable to Venezuela was on the cards for Colombia, Trump responded: "I like the sound of that to me personally."

President Petro, once a member of a left-wing insurgent group who left armed struggle in the 1990s, rejected the accusations. "I am no an illegitimate leader and I am not a drug trafficker," he stated.

"The US president speaks without knowledge. Stop slandering me," he posted online.

"Should American forces attack peasants, they will become thousands of guerrillas in the hills. And should they arrest the president, which a significant portion of Colombians holds in high esteem, they will release the ‘jaguar’ of the nation," Petro warned.

From Guerrilla to Leader

Petro spent part of his youth belonging of the leftist M-19 guerrilla group although reports indicate that he never took part in armed clashes. Following his disarmament, he participated in creating the nation's constitution in the early 90s and later became an influential politician. He held the office of mayor of the Colombian capital before being elected the nation's highest office.

"I swore not to touch a gun ... but for the homeland I will take up the fight," he said.

Reinforced Protection along with Widespread Condemnation

Minister Pedro Sánchez reported that the national leader's personal security had been reinforced.

Many among Colombia’s conservative opposition have sided with Trump's stance, but voices from all sides of the political spectrum have condemned the notion of American military action against their nation.

Diplomatic and Financial Strains

The US cancelled his travel authorization following he encouraged US military personnel to refuse orders that violate law. Later, in October, it placed economic restrictions against the president, the first lady and a number of key allies.

Concurrently the US was building up its troop levels in the Caribbean and targeting suspected drug boats to pressure Venezuela’s Maduro, US forces also carried out attacks on maritime targets in the eastern Pacific region near Colombia.
