A fatal railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and management of the country's key government projects.
The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a route constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We will meticulously determine the reasons behind this accident,” affirmed the country's president.
The official confirmed that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The official added plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
